Missions

OUR CHURCH.  OUR COMMUNITY.  OUR WORLD.

Called to Serve

"As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another,

as good stewards of God's varied grace."

1 Peter 4:10

How do you feel called to serve, in the church, in your community, in the world around us?  Service to others is one of the core practices of Christian life, and one of the most tangible ways we can show God's love to others.  There are many ways you can serve others, and serve with others, at FUMC Saline.  Your generosity as well as gifts of time and talent support God's mission throughout the world.  Explore the links below to see how we connect our church in mission.

God's Work, Our Hands

Mobility Worldwide - Saline

According to the World Health Organization over 70 million people are leg/feet handicapped in developing countries.  Restoring mobility often restores people’s place in their world, their village, their family, and resurrects their personal sense of dignity and self-worth.

FUMC Saline volunteers have been producing and assembling high-quality Mobility Carts since 2009.  Over 600 carts have been built and shipped by our local team.  If you have a willingness and desire to serve those in need around the world, you can join in this global mission.  Contact the church office at (734) 429-4730 to be put in touch with the team leader.

MOBILITY MI SALINE

Adult Missions Team

The Adult Missions Team has served faithfully at various international locations over the years.  This includes trips to Mexico, Grenada, Puerto Rico, Panama and the Czech Republic.  Closer to home, they assisted with Katrina recovery in Mississippi replacing drywall and repairing other damage to homes. More recently the team has been traveling to the northern U.P area around Houghton, Michigan.  Their projects there included similar home repair/improvements for those in need.  Currently they are helping to restore historic houses that will bolster tourism employment in the area.  Space on the team is limited due to the availability of housing in that region. If you are interested in future Adult Mission projects, please contact either of the Missions Ministry Team Leads, B Melendez or Sue Butcher.

Lake Louise/Boyne County Service Project

Lake Louise is a Christian summer camp affiliated with the Michigan Area United Methodist Conference. Join our team of FUMC Saline volunteers for a week in June as they travel to Lake Louise to help prepare the camp buildings and grounds for summer as well as participate in other service projects around Boyne County. Lodging and food are provided by the camp. Contact Tom Zimmerman at (419) 262-5575 for more information.

United Women in Faith

United Women in Faith at FUMC (formerly United Methodist Women) sponsors many mission projects throughout the year.  They actively support local and international charitable organizations; provide congregational support with meals in times of need and at funeral luncheons; and sponsor assorted fund-raising activities.  Their financial support and time commitment to organizations like Saline Area Social Services, Safe House, and Food Gatherers connects the church in mission with our community.

BEYOND OUR WALLS

FUMC Saline partners with various local, regional and international ministries.

In addition to financial support, members of our congregation

regularly volunteer their time and talent.

SALINE AREA SOCIAL SERVICES
  • Saline Area Social Service (SASS) is a private, non-profit organization that has been part of our community for over 60 years and serves the most vulnerable students, families and senior citizens that live in and around the Saline area. FUMC Saline supports SASS by contributing to holiday meal gift cards, Christmas Adopt-a-Family, cash contributions as well as by donating non-perishable/paper goods which can be dropped off at the blue house collection box in the church lobby.

CASS COMMUNITY SOCIAL SERVICES
  • Cass Community Social Services is a Detroit-based agency with a person-centered philosophy, dedicated to providing food, housing, health services, and job programs. FUMC Saline supports Cass through our budgeted missions giving and member contributions. Volunteers from our church have also furnished and served the Christmas Day meal at Cass for over 30 years.

DELONIS CENTER
  • FUMC Saline provides non-perishable snack food donations as well as hats, gloves and scarves for the Robert J. Delonis Center rotating shelter which is held at local faith-based host sites. Members can drop off items in the church lobby at the Opportunity Wall when FUMC Saline is participating (usually in January/February).

MOBILITY WORLDWIDE
  • According to the World Health Organization over 70 million people are leg/feet handicapped in developing countries.  They’ve been severely impacted by birth defects, disease, accidents, or military conflicts, which often leave active land mines and unexploded ordinance in the vicinity of regular people, just like us.  Restoring mobility often restores people’s place in their world, their village, their family, and resurrects their personal sense of dignity and self-worth.  Mobility Worldwide provides these children of God with hand cranked Mobility Carts, vehicles that allow them to go where ordinary wheelchairs won’t go.  There is no cost to the recipient – we reflect the love of God by giving them the Gift of Mobility.  FUMC Saline supports Mobility Worldwide through our budgeted missions in addition to building carts for shipment around the world.

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief)
  • As the humanitarian relief and development arm of The United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Committee on Relief assists United Methodists and churches to become involved globally in direct ministry to persons in need. FUMC Saline supports UMCOR through our budgeted missions giving and member contributions. Members and friends are welcome to make ongoing contributions via our online giving portal. We will also ensure members are aware of opportunities to contribute to special UMCOR projects as they arise.

NOMADS
  • NOMADS provide volunteer labor such as new construction, remodeling, repairs, and disaster rebuilding for United Methodist organizations. Team members do maintenance, cleaning, painting, electrical, drywall, sewing, flooring. FUMC Saline supports NOMADS through our budgeted missions giving and member contributions. We have a few families in our congregation who have participated in NOMADS projects throughout the United States. If you are interested in learning more or would like to participate in NOMADS, please contact the church office at (734) 429-4730.
METHODIST CHILDREN'S HOME SOCIETY
  • MCHS provides individualized treatment, care, advocacy, and permanency to children and families impacted by childhood trauma. Services include Foster Care & Adoption, Residential Treatment, Child Abuse Prevention, and Community Wellness. FUMC Saline supports MCHS through our budgeted missions giving and member contributions as well as through the collection of wish list items throughout the year. Look for the collection bins at the Opportunity Wall in the church lobby.
